Introduction to R and R Studio (Part 2)

The course will be split over the following dates and will take place online:

  • Wednesday 15th November 2023 – 9:30am until 12:30pm (part 1)
  • Thursday 16th November 2023 – 9:30am until 12:30pm (part 2)

Learn about how to import data, wrangle data and produce and export graphs.

Pre-requisites: No prior knowledge of R is required; however, it is assumed that you will have a moderate level of computer literacy. For example, you will be able to navigate to drives and files and be confident in searching for solutions to technical problems on the internet. You will work with, or have an interest in, data..

About the course: This is a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in data analysis using Excel, SQL, Access or uses statistical programmes like SPSS to get started with R and R Studio.  After this course, you will:

  • See examples of R in producing healthcare related visualisations and use publicly available healthcare data to answer questions.
  • Recognise and understand key terms often used by users of R.
  • Interact with R using the RStudio environment.
  • Learn how to set up some of the accessibility features of RStudio.
  • Take charge of their workflow using RStudio projects.
  • Import data into R using csv files (other data sources will be discussed).
  • Carry out data manipulation using simple steps to solve complex problems.
  • Join multiple tables together.
  • Produce and save plots using ggplot2.
  • Learn how to find more information on functions within R packages.
  • Open an RMarkdown template and learn how to get started in producing an integrated text and code report. Take away ideas for continuing learning after the course

Oluwasegun Apejoye

Shiny Developer at Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

Oluwasegun has an MSc in Data Science and 3 years of experience using R to produce reproducible analytic pipelines. He works as a Shiny Developer at Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, using R and other open-source tools to produce production-grade dashboards for data applications. Oluwasegun has been an active member of the NHS-R community since joining in 2021 and is keen to democratise the use of open-source tools in the healthcare sector. Outside of work, I like to play football in both physical and virtual forms. Additionally, I am constantly improving my fathering skills with my wonderful child.
