Introduction to R and R Studio with Farai Mashegede and Robert Willans

Learn about how to import data, wrangle data and produce and export graphs.

Pre-requisites: No prior knowledge of R is required; however, it is assumed that you will have a moderate level of computer literacy. For example, you will be able to navigate to drives and files and be confident in searching for solutions to technical problems on the internet. You will work with, or have an interest in, data..

About the course: This is a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in data analysis using Excel, SQL, Access or uses statistical programmes like SPSS to get started with R and R Studio.  After this course, you will:

  • See examples of R in producing healthcare related visualisations and use publicly available healthcare data to answer questions.
  • Recognise and understand key terms often used by users of R.
  • Interact with R using the RStudio environment.
  • Learn how to set up some of the accessibility features of RStudio.
  • Take charge of their workflow using RStudio projects.
  • Import data into R using csv files (other data sources will be discussed).
  • Carry out data manipulation using simple steps to solve complex problems.
  • Join multiple tables together.
  • Produce and save plots using ggplot2.
  • Learn how to find more information on functions within R packages.
  • Open an RMarkdown template and learn how to get started in producing an integrated text and code report. Take away ideas for continuing learning after the course

Farai Mashegede

Predictive Analytics Lead at Barts Health NHS Trust

Predictive analytics professional with a demonstrated history of working in the hospital and health care industry. Experienced in data warehousing, building predictive models, routine and ad-hoc business intelligence reporting, advanced analytics and demographics and population planning. Graduated from Northumbria University in 2020 with a MSc Information Science (Data Analytics).

Robert Willans

Data Scientist at the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE)

Rob works for the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a Data Scientist. He holds a PhD in Health Economics, written entirely in R Markdown! Rob has been using R for many years for modelling, analysis and building shiny apps, and has been involved in training new R users in his current and prior roles.
