NHS-R Workshop: GitHub Actions 101 – Test, Build, and Deploy – 22nd November 2023

GitHub Actions 101 – Test, Build, and Deploy

  • Wednesday 22nd November 2023 with Joseph Wilson and Harriet Sands
  • 9:30am until 1:00pm (UK time)

Course Description:

Participants will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience of creating basic actions, such as running tests, executing shell commands, and performing GitHub tasks. To facilitate this, they will be given access to a GitHub repository that they can create a fork of and complete practical exercises to apply their knowledge and reinforce their understanding of the concepts taught.

The course aims to provide attendees with a comprehensive understanding of GitHub Actions and equip them with the skills to leverage its potential. It will cover:

  • GitHub Actions Basics: core concepts and essential terminology for GitHub Actions, including the YAML syntax for defining workflows.
  • How to leverage pre-built actions and workflows form the GitHub Marketplace.
  • How to use secrets to manage sensitive information securely.
  • How to structure workflows to manage when they will be triggered, what jobs will execute, and how they can optimise their workflows efficiency.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have the skills and confidence to implement GitHub Actions in their own projects, automating routine tasks and streamlining their development workflows. Whether you are a beginner or an intermediate user, this workshop offers valuable insights and practical guidance to help you unlock the full potential of GitHub Actions.

Please be advised that access to a GitHub account will be required for this workshop, as well as a basic understanding of how to use Git and GitHub.
