Intermediate R – follow on from ‘Introduction to R and R Studio’ with Simon Wellesley-Miller

We are very excited to announce that the NHS-R Community will be hosting its annual conference, including pre-conference online talks, online workshops and the main conference, during October 2023

The online conference workshop will be hosted via Zoom and take place on the following date:

  • Friday 06th October 2023 – 9:30am until 4:30pm (UK time)

Workshop Content

In this workshop we will be looking at applying some of the knowledge learned in the ‘Introduction to R and R Studio’ workshop and applying the methods learned to practical questions.

Key topics:

  • Further uses of dplyr with conditional statements
  • Use of group_by and mutate to create sub totals and percentages across groups
  • Date manipulation
  • Use of stringr to clean up messy strings
  • Practice with charting in GGplot and simple conversion to plotly
  • How to create pretty tables.

  • The NHS-R/NHS.pycom Conference 2023 at Edgbaston Stadium on Tuesday 17th October 2023 and Wednesday 18th October 2023 (can be attended in-person or virtually)
  • A post-conference ‘speed dating’ inspired networking session to provide community member’s with an opportunity to be introduced to other event attendees in the afternoon of Tuesday 17th October 2023 (in-person attendance required)
  • A post-conference social in the evening of Tuesday 17th October 2023 (in-person attendance required).

Simon Wellesley-Miller

Senior Analytical Manger in NHS England

I am Simon Wellesley-Miller based in Exeter, I am a Senior Analytical Manger in NHS England, working in the Elective Recovery Team and also regional South West Intelligence and Insights Team. I am very passionate about using data to improve outcomes for the NHS and recently completed a Masters Degree in Healthcare Data Science at Exeter University. I have previously worked in an analytical role for a mental health provider, the police and child protection services.

I am a fellow of the NHS-R community and keen to promote data science and the use of R in the NHS, I have been using R for about 4 years and really passionate the use of R for robust analytics.

I lead for the South West Branch of APHA (association of professional healthcare analysts) and keen to promote analytical networks across the south west and wider.
In what little spare time I have, I love running and cycling, specifically ultra running. I am also a massive nerd and run dungeons and dragons sessions for my kids and friends.
